Sustainable Urban and Rural Built Environments: Planning, Design, Implementation
October 23, 2009
Course DescriptionSustainability in the built environment is not only about what we build, but how and where we build. The workshop will focus on sustainability planning and implementation from a systemic perspective. True sustainability starts at the macro scale with an environmental site analysis and an understanding of community patterns. By understanding the interconnections between people and nature, project teams can create a framework for sustainability that leads to healthier and more enduring development. Participants will learn about approaches to sustainable urban and rural development using case studies from urban infill and brownfield redevelopment projects to campus planning and rural greenfield developments at the multi-building and master planning scale. Instructors will walk participants through the key milestones in the sustainable development process:
Resource Systems Discussed: Energy; Water; Wastewater; Transportation; Community Development; Solid Waste; Land Use Patterns; Building Design; Habitat & Open Space Registration and Fees
