Course Description

Throughout time, and in every corner of the world people have gathered in celebration, in ceremony, to take on a project, to play and compete, or to express themselves creatively. For many contemporary communities, events have become a new kind of Commons, a place at the center where people join together to preserve, renew, and promote community identity and culture. In the process, new social networks are formed, and community and local culture is enhanced and preserved. This process of community building has immediate relevance to our efforts to lead more sustainable lives in our homes, workplaces, and our community events and celebrations.

This participatory workshop is designed to address today's challenges and opportunities for community festivals and special event planners, particularly in developing strategies to innovate environmentally while reducing costs, promoting inclusivity, and building strong networks of reciprocity and collaboration. It is all possible! Join us to learn how. From initial planning through post-event measurement, the triple-bottom line will be explored using case studies, resource roundtables, and the experience and expertise of leaders in the field of sustainable event design and management.

We'll begin the day by assessing your event's existing sustainability efforts, and then focus on zero waste and how to "green" your tickets or admission fees. Working within a proven framework for implementing sustainability systems, participants will end the morning by examining how sustainability practices implemented during events can build community through leaving a community legacy.

The afternoon will be spent exploring standards and certification, as well as documenting, measuring and evaluating your event using the triple bottom line approach. Participants will leave with useful tools and have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers. We look forward to all the ways we will learn from one another!
