Investment in Natural Infrastr.: Ecosystem Services as an Emerging Asset Class

March 19, 2010
Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
UO in Portland, White Stag Block 152
Presenter: Kevin Halsey

Course Description

Environmental investment is predicated on delivering market rate returns to investors in such a way that 'the more good you do, the more money you make'. Socially Responsible Investment criteria now influence something above $1 trillion in capital, but the specific environmental and social mandates governing this money are often only vaguely related to any meaningful definition of sustainability. Venture capital and private equity investment seeking competitive returns have been primarily focused on energy related technology.

This workshop will focus on new market mechanisms and incentive structures that align returns with production of ecosystem services in the United States. Topics covered will include:

  • Brief introduction to 'applied ecosystem services theory'
  • The role of science, regulation and NGO's in market formation
  • Supply and demand of ecosystem services
  • Alternative structures for investment
  • Case studies
