Carbon Footprints and Climate Risk: Tools for Business and Government

Course Purpose and Intended Participants This workshop is specifically designed for public- and private-sector staff who must conduct a GHG inventory for their organizations or prepare their organizations for mandatory reporting requirements at the state or federal level. The workshop will provide a detailed description of the steps and challenges involved with conducting a greenhouse gas inventory and how to use the inventory results to understand and define climate risk for your organization. Participants will engage in hands-on activities throughout the day and will leave with a suite of tools, resources, and guidance for calculating, understanding, and communicating their carbon footprint. Course DescriptionThis workshop will provide concrete tools for conducting a GHG inventory (or carbon footprint) of a corporation, municipal or county government, or other entity. The structure of the day will follow the entire process, including:
Participants will leave with a complete structure and plan for carrying out a GHG inventory for their respective organizations. Activities throughout the day will provide directions for first steps. The workshop will draw on details and insights from emerging GHG reporting frameworks in Washington, Oregon and California. Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting: WA, OR, CA Technical pre-requisites: There are no knowledge requirements for this workshop, but participants will be required to tackle quantitative reasoning challenges. A general understanding of climate change, greenhouse gases, and your organization's activities will be important to getting the most out of the workshop.
