Sustainable Economic Development through Public Sector Investment

April 23, 2010
Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
UO in Portland, White Stag Block 152
Presenter: Robert Young

As private markets falter there is increasing interest in how public sector investment can drive sustainable economic development. Drawing from successful examples, this course examines public sector strategies to jump-start and sustain the green economy.

Topics will include a brief overview of sustainable investment, distinguishing it from simply investing in environmental technologies (for example, solar power). Throughout the day, a number of sustainable investment strategies will be explored including:

  • Identification of the "Sustainable" Sector, its promotion and capitalization
  • Engaging import substitution in municipal and regional economies
  • Developing Green Infrastructure to enhance capital value, and others

Examples of public sector engagement will be drawn from the State, municipal and community levels. In an effort to address the needs and resources of various communities, case studies will include both, capital intensive efforts such as those emerging from the federal stimulus package and public sector initiatives that require low capital investment.
