Land Use Planning: an Ecosystem Approach to Achieving Sustainability

Course DescriptionThis course will focus on how land use decisions affect our ability to achieve sustainability. The choices we make with regard to spatial planning on the land around us, as well as in coastal and ocean areas, will be critical to determining whether we can be sustainable in the future. This course will start by identifying factors that will (and in some cases already are) changing the way we think about land use, including climate change, increased pressures from population growth, concerns about peak oil, the increased focus on renewable energy, etc. This course will identify emerging trends in land use and marine spatial planning and explore the latest methods and approaches such as:
