Sustainable Transportation Strategies: Processes, Indicators, and Measurements
June 4, 2010
Course DescriptionTransportation accounts for an estimated 30%-40% of the carbon emissions into the atmosphere, and it's a number we must change. What makes transportation so complicated and these numbers difficult to address, is that transportation is not a closed system, and the players include people with individual choices and personal needs that make it impossible to direct outcomes. The carbon imbalance in the atmosphere is an indicator of imbalance here in our communities. Reaching true sustainability is about more than fixing the carbon equation. In transportation, sustainability is about providing equitable, safe, efficient access for all people while protecting the environment, health (in all of its forms) and communities. Communities are challenged to immediately reduce the ongoing carbon output of their transportation projects. The instructors will share tips on:
This class shows how using integrated processes and specific tools yields real results. Participants will walk away with tools and knowledge to apply to projects the very next day, and ideas to inspire innovation in this emerging field. Who should attend: planners, engineers, students, community involvement professionals and activists, health advocates, and others working to understand how to improve the sustainability of transportation projects in their communities.
